Yemassee, SC, 2016

Old Sheldon Church, originally known as Prince William's Parish Church, was built in the Greek Revival style between 1745 and 1753. It was burned down by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt in 1826, only to be burned down again by General Sherman in February 1865.

The day I shot this series in 2016, my wife and I were the only people on the property, and the history and reverence were palpable in the air. In recent years, this historic site has been deluged with tourists and photographers, and the church ruins have been surrounded by an iron fence, rendering this shot unmakeable any longer.
